Marvel kicks off 2019 with Captain Marvel, the 21st movie in its Marvel Cinematic Universe, which marked its 10th anniversary in 2018. Captain Marvel marks the first time a female superhero has headlined her film. Captain Marvel is also the first MCU film to be co-directed by a woman, and Captain Marvel has all the usual MCU humor and action (with a few surprises), and plenty of girl power moments. With $455 million at the box office surpassing all expectations and an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes 🍅, you can’t help but wonder what the hype about. Here are 5 reasons why my daughter and I adored this film.

But first the storyline.

Captain Marvel tells the origin story of Carol Danvers, as we first meet her, she's a member of the Kree Starforce team and merely goes by the name Vers. For six years, Vers has been living on the Kree capital planet of Hala among their society and training to become an elite warrior under her mentor and commander (Jude Law), using powers bestowed upon her by the Kree after they rescued her. However, Vers doesn't remember anything about her life before arriving on Hala and struggles to know who she is without knowing her past. Then, when a Starforce mission goes awry, and Vers is captured by the Kree's sworn enemy, the Skrulls - led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) - they dig into her memories, allowing Vers more insight into her past that she can remember. And the rest you can guess what will happen.

#1 Smashes the Box Office

That said, Captain Marvel manages to defeat all the trolls and smashes the box office, being the most significant worldwide opening for a female-led movie, breaking Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast record, which held the top spot. Disney had to revise its projection estimates over the weekend. Can we say #girlpower!

#2 Brie Larson

Brie Larson kicked ass in this film. Marvel Studios has genuinely delivered a female hero who can easily stand side by side with Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - and with them in a fight - in Captain Marvel. Though it took 10 years and 20 films, the MCU finally has its first solo female-led film, and Captain Marvel makes use of many girl power moments. There are scenes like Wonder Woman's No Man's Land where Captain Marvel demonstrates her power which reveals Carol's strength. These moments are what girls and women have been dreaming of seeing in their superhero movies.

#3 Nick Fury x Captain Marvel Relationship

Finally, we understand the ending of The Avengers: Infinity War when Nick Fury pages Captain Marvel. In this movie, we got to see how these two met and created a bond between each other that was fun and entertaining. Captain Marvel rigs Nick Fury’s pager to contact her for only emergencies in which we see in this in The Avengers: Infinity War. MCU does a great job connecting all the dots. Now we can’t wait to see The Avengers: Endgame in April and how all these ties together.

#4 Goose the Cat

How freaking cute was Goose?! Captain Marvel might be the star of her own, but another character, in particular, is just as awe-inspiring: Goose the Cat. Nick Fury couldn't resist the cute kitty, and neither can the rest of the world!

#5 Post Credit Scene(s)

How great was this post scenes?! Just wait as there are 2 post scene credits, and I don’t want to spoil it yet for those who haven’t seen it, but I will say it is well worth the wait!

Overall, it's not the greatest MCU movie out had a slow start, but from the opening tribute to Stan Lee, to the the 90s Nostalgia references throughout the film to the fantastic CGI graphics, and all the relationships that are built … Capitan Marvel is still a must-see! MCU does a tremendous job telling each character’s story, and I can see many people falling in love with Capitan Marvel for years to come. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. If you have seen it, let me know your thoughts.
